Inti Raymi

Inti Raymi, or the Festival of the Sun, is one of the most important celebrations in the Andean calendar. This ancestral ceremony, rooted in the Inca Empire, marks the winter solstice and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle, in which the earth is renewed and thanks are given to the sun for its energy and sustenance.

In Catamarca, Inti Raymi is celebrated with profound spirituality and respect for tradition. One of the epicenters of the celebration is the El Shincal de Quimivil archaeological site, an ancient Inca city where rituals are performed with the Quimivil Indigenous Community, reaffirming the connection to Andean history and worldview.

Another significant celebration takes place in Santa MarĂa, where each year the last Inti Raymi before the arrival of Europeans to these lands is reenacted. Through a performance rich in symbolism, the essence of this ritual is revived, recalling the cultural strength of the Indigenous peoples and their connection to the sun, nature, and the cycles of life.

Inti Raymi is not only a celebration of the past, but also a reaffirmation of Andean identity in the present, a moment of encounter, gratitude, and renewal that continues to beat in the heart of Catamarca.
