Balcony of the Pissis
At over 4,700 meters above sea level, El Balcón del Pissis (The Balcony of Pissis) is the gateway to a breathtaking landscape, offering one of the most beautiful views of the Andes Mountains and three multicolored lagoons.
The azure, black, and green lagoons acquire these hues when the water is in motion. Early in the morning, the absolute stillness transforms them into mirrors of water reflecting Pissis, one of the giants of the Los Seismiles region, which encompasses volcanoes and peaks exceeding 6,000 meters above sea level.
In this location, situated 125 km from Fiambalá, you can also see the Tres Cruces and Olmedo hills; vicuñas, guanacos, and, when the temperature rises, the Los Aparejos lagoon welcomes Andean flamingos (parinas).
Route of the Six-Thousanders
In western Catamarca lies one of the highest sections of the Andes Mountains. National Route 60 winds its way between nearly 20 peaks that exceed 6,000 meters in altitude, making them irresistible to mountaineers from around the world, trekking enthusiasts, and 4x4 adventurers.
The Six-Thousanders are accessed via National Route 60 (paved), which connects Fiambalá with the San Francisco border crossing (201 km away). Among the volcanoes visible from the route are Ojos del Salado, at 6,893 meters above sea level (the highest volcano in the world and the second highest peak in the Americas after Aconcagua), Pissis, San Francisco, and Incahuasi, on whose summit Inca ruins were found.
The route can be done in a day, with several stops to enjoy incredible panoramic views of the mountain range. Due to the high altitude, it is recommended to go with guides and especially with 4x4 excursions that allow access via secondary roads.
Along National Route 60, there are basic roadside shelters (without services) to take refuge in case of storms or to call for help in an emergency. It is important to stay on the main road.
