La Merced Tunnels

The La Merced Tunnels are a fascinating, unfinished feat of engineering located in the Paclín Department, about 55 km northeast of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca. These tunnels were part of an ambitious railway project that sought to connect Catamarca with Tucumán by crossing the Gracián mountain range, and consequently with northwestern Argentina via the General Belgrano Railway.

The La Merced Tunnels have become a tourist attraction for adventure and nature lovers. The route offers a combination of history, jungle landscapes, and a unique trekking and photo safari experience.

Visiting them is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a little-known part of Argentine railway history and enjoy the natural beauty of Catamarca.

In La Merced, you can also find regional sweets and confections, homemade cheeses, and leather and basketry crafts.

This center houses a science lab, robotics classroom, language room, small cinema, and spaces for exhibitions and cultural activities, making it a meeting point for the community and visitors.
