Galán Volcano

It is a geological phenomenon; its name comes from the Quechua word "Kkala," meaning "naked." Due to the complete absence of vegetation, it is the result of an eruption that occurred 2,200,000 years ago.

A visit to this attraction is the most challenging due to the time required and the varying altitude, which ranges from 3,500 to 5,000 meters above sea level. It is a popular destination for mountaineering, birdwatching, wildlife and flora observation, photo safaris, and trekking.

The landscape is constantly changing with the shifting colors, the textures of the rock formations and dunes, and most wonderfully, in the Vegas area, where vicuña populations can be observed grazing on the meltwater slopes.

The adventure begins at the summit of Galán Volcano, reaching 5,000 meters above sea level before entering the crater, which measures 42 kilometers in diameter and is considered the largest in the world. Inside, you'll find Laguna Diamante and Laguna Grande, where you can see Andean flamingos (similar to pink flamingos), various fumaroles reaching temperatures of 86°C, and vicuñas and foxes that coexist among the snow-capped volcanoes.
